Shark Fishing Daytona Beach: What to Know

 ·  By Captain Brad

Volusia County — home to Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach — is consistently ranked among the top shark fishing destinations in the world. Here's what you need to know before you book your charter.

Why Is Daytona Beach So Good for Sharks?

The combination of warm Gulf Stream water, abundant baitfish populations, and miles of accessible beach and nearshore structure creates ideal conditions for sharks. The shallow nearshore reefs and river inlets concentrate baitfish, which in turn attract large numbers of sharks close to shore — making them accessible on a 3-hour charter without going far offshore.

Common Species

  • Bull Sharks — The most common large shark in our waters. Aggressive, powerful fighters.
  • Blacktip Sharks — Fast and acrobatic. Plentiful from spring through fall.
  • Spinner Sharks — Known for spinning out of the water when hooked.
  • Lemon Sharks — Strong, stubborn fighters common nearshore.
  • Nurse Sharks — Bottom-dwelling, excellent for first-time shark anglers.

Do I Need Experience?

No experience is needed. Captain Brad handles all the rigging, baiting, and fish handling. First-timers are welcome and will be guided through every step of the process. Shark fishing is one of the most exciting experiences you can have on the water, regardless of your fishing background.

What Should I Bring?

Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Bring water and snacks. All fishing tackle and bait are provided. A valid Florida fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older — Captain Brad can advise on how to obtain one.
