One of the most common questions I get from new clients is: "Should I book a 3-hour or a longer charter?" The answer depends on what you want to catch, who's in your group, and how far offshore you want to go. Here's my honest breakdown.
3-Hour Charters — Great for Families & First-Timers
A 3-hour charter is perfect for:
- Families with young children
- First-time anglers
- Inshore fishing (Redfish, Trout, Snook)
- Nearshore fishing (Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack)
- Shark fishing
- Groups who want an exciting experience without a full day commitment
On a 3-hour trip, we stay within 10–15 miles of shore. There's plenty of action and it's a great introduction to saltwater fishing in Daytona Beach.
5-Hour Charters — More Time, More Distance
A 5-hour deep sea charter is ideal for:
- Experienced anglers targeting offshore species
- Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Red Snapper
- Groups who want to maximize their time on the water
- Reaching the Gulf Stream and deep water reefs (40–60 miles offshore)
The extra time makes a significant difference offshore. We can reach productive deep water structure that simply isn't accessible on a shorter trip.
My Recommendation
If you've never been on a fishing charter before, start with a 3-hour trip. If you're an experienced angler or specifically want to target offshore pelagics like Mahi or Sailfish, book the 5-hour deep sea charter. Either way, you're going to have a great time on the water.
